Gestalt Language Processing

  • Some children learn to talk using “chunks” of language—like quotes from shows and songs or repeated sentences—instead of one word at a time. This is called gestalt language processing. It’s a natural way to learn language, but some children can get “stuck” in the early stages of language development.

  • Gestalt language processing is common in neurodivergent children. If your child is a gestalt language processor, they may:

    • Repeat scripts from media

    • Echo full sentences instead of answering questions

    • Repeat the same phrase out of context

    • Speaks in ways that sound like speech but aren’t easily understood

    • Have tried traditional speech therapy with limited progress

  • We use evidence-based, child-led therapy to support your child’s journey from scripted language to flexible, original communication while honoring their individual learning style.
